The emergency department is not the only option
Most people in the city who have a severe headache and no appointment end up choosing between waiting it out and sitting in an emergency department. The ER is the right call for a genuine red flag, and the signs that make it one are set out in headache red flags.
For a known headache disorder having a bad day, an ER visit tends to mean a long wait followed by a treatment aimed at getting you out rather than at the mechanism. Being seen somewhere that already knows what a migraine needs is a different experience, and usually a faster one.
What same-day actually means here
Weekday hours run to eight in the evening, which is deliberate: a headache that starts after work is still treatable the same day. Saturday mornings are covered too. Contact us first rather than arriving unannounced, so the room and the treatment are ready when you get here.
Treatments that need you in the building
An attack that has not broken on oral medication is usually an absorption problem rather than a potency one, which is what intravenous therapy is for. Where the pain has a cervical or occipital component, an occipital nerve block is often both the treatment and the diagnostic test.
Common questions
How late can I be seen on a weekday?
The clinic is open until 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and until noon on Saturday. Please call or text before setting off so we can confirm there is a slot.
Should I go to the ER instead?
If you have any of the warning signs described in headache red flags, yes, and without delay. Otherwise a headache service is usually the better use of the evening.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?
